Korte Prinsengracht 5
Corner Haarlemmer Houttuinen
Private house with stepped gable
Year of construction: 1653
Style: Amsterdam Renaissance
Erected north of the Haarlemmerdijk, so outside the dyke protection. In the 17th century this part bordered on the port of the IJ. This house was probably situated on the waterfront. In the 19th century this area was separated from the water of the IJ by the construction of a railway embankment and the Central Station. Nowadays Korte Prinsengracht is unfortunately positioned next to a viaduct. With its deep red colour and cheerful window frames it should have a better location.
