Noordermarkt 1
Corner Prinsengracht
Private house with stepped gable
Period of construction: 17th century
Style: Amsterdam Renaissance
The buildings on the right side of the photo are situated on the Prinsengracht. From this canal, which is the outer canal of the district, the Jordaan area was developed. In the Jordaan the existing watercourse has been respected, resulting in streets and buildings that are not situated in a 90 degree angle to the canals. Noordermarkt 1 makes an angle of appr. 60 degrees with the building on the Prinsengracht.
Originally the Jordaan was where fruit and vegetables were grown. One could imagine that Noordermarkt 1 has been constructed between the Prinsengracht at the front and the open fields at the back. This photo could reflect a realistic situation, except for the check suit of course.
